“Out of all the directors I’ve worked with during my many years of performing, I don’t think anyone has come close to Zoë Lillis. The specification and originality that she brings to her work is unlike anything I’ve done before. I’ve gotten the chance to work with Zoë on her production of Offstage (2021) and Amélie (2022) and they both stand to be some of my most favorite productions I’ve ever been a part of. I had the pleasure of taking on the title role of Amélie and I couldn’t have done it without her. The countless hours that she set aside to really dissect and understand Amélie allowed me to have such a deep understanding of my character that I don’t usually get to have. I initially wasn’t going to audition for Amélie because I didn’t think it was a show that I fit into, but Zoë opened me up to seeing similarities between Amélie and I that I probably never would’ve discovered on my own. The amazing thing about musical theatre is getting to step into the shoes of someone else but I think what makes it extra amazing is being able to show an audience what parts of yourself you bring to that character. At the end of the day I think that most amazing thing about working with her is getting to hear all the obscure, crazy things she brings to light in an effort to relate ideas with each other. Without getting too into it, Tinkerbell and Amélie are basically the same person, trust me. If you get the chance to work with Zoë, it will be an experience you will never forget.”

“When I think about what the future of theatre should be, I think of Zoë. When directing, she puts her company first, leading with empathy and compassion while empowering her cast by inviting them into the conversation. Zoë never directs in a vacuum, she thrives in a collaborative setting and understands how to balance all priorities and viewpoints while driving forward with her direction. While being an exceptional director, Zoë possesses admirable humility and is never afraid to pitch in and ensure the production is complete.”

“My experience with Zoë in Offstage was far and away the most intense, intimate, and fulfilling artistic experience I’ve had as an actor. Zoë masterfully creates an atmosphere of self-exploration to create the magic and warmth of her work, and yet provides the comfort and understanding of a close friend all while maintaining professional edge. I highly look forward to working with Zoë again, as well as seeing the beautiful pieces she continues to create.”

“While many creators explicate the value of the ‘process,’ and how improving the process can improve the product, very few are actually able to implement those ideals: Zoë is one of those rare few. Endlessly inventive, compassionate, collaborative, and kind, the products of her hard work are clearly imbued with just as much care as craft, and it's the combination of those two that elevates her above many other artists of this generation. Her output speaks for itself, but the endless affection and praise from those who work with her speaks just as much, if not more so. In short, Zoë's incredible, she's the first one I call, and I share that sentiment with anyone who knows her.”

“Zoë is one of the most thoughtful and creative directors I've ever worked with. Every decision she makes is in partnership with the cast and crew and is always in service to the story. Zoë has set a new standard for what directing should look like. I look forward to working with her again and seeing all of the brilliant work she brings to life. She is undoubtedly meant to be an artist.”
